Places to Experience
Anuradhapura
The first ancient capital of Sri Lanka, dating back to the 4th century BC. It features enormous dome-shaped stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree.
Polonnaruwa
The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms. Cycle through the well-preserved ruins of royal palaces, bathing pools, and the magnificent rock-cut Buddha statues of Gal Vihara.
Yapahuwa
A massive granite rock rising abruptly from the plains, serving as a short-lived capital in the 13th century. Climb the steep, exquisitely carved ornamental staircase to the ruins of the Temple of the Tooth.
Mihintale
Believed to be the meeting point where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. Climb the 1,840 granite steps to reach the sacred summit and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding plains.
Aukana Buddha Statue
A magnificent 12-meter-tall statue of the Buddha carved out of a solid granite rock face in the 5th century. It is a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan stone carving.
Galle Dutch Fort
A living UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander the ramparts and narrow streets lined with perfectly preserved colonial-era buildings that now house boutique shops, cafes, and museums.
